Last year my husband had some scrap wood so he built this little house that we would occasionally put some nuts or corn in through the winter. Well this spring the birds seemed to say thank you very much and proceeded to move right in. Now, instead of being a squirrel hang out, it has become a bird duplex.
Not only have they commandeered the squirrel house, I think they eat more cat food than the cats. Of course the Blue Jays have always been brazen and seem to feed only on cat food at times, but now other birds are following suit. The other morning a Blue Jay was at the bowl getting his standard breakfast and a Brown Thrasher was standing in line behind him waiting his turn. I guess I will just stand back and applaud them for going after what they want.
I enjoy the squirrels (and chipmunks too), but they don't seem to come too close because of the dogs. And the blue jays really are bold, they eat dog food-I like the squirrel/bird house your husband built.
ReplyDeleteI have a blue jay but no bird feeders. the dogs get too excited I think. In the backyard, the birds dive bomb the stray that likes to sleep on our patio.
ReplyDeleteMaria, that first photo is fantastic! Are you using a new lense or did that guy just let you sneak up close?
ReplyDeleteHi, came over from Kate's A Picture A Day blog. I love your post "A Mother's Day Story". They are absolutely adorable. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Loved the squirrel photo and blog. I feed the "birds" (really the squirrels) in our neighborhood. This morning I had 8 squirrels. I have been able to catch 7 at one time to get a photo, but the 8 were to busy eating and running around to get all of them.
ReplyDeleteYou have some fantastic photos
Thanks for sharing
Cindy
What a relief to read a blog that celebrates squirrels that are usually eschewed in our corner of the world! Kudos to you and your husband for building them a home (even though they have not been able yet to move in....)
ReplyDeleteI love this homemade squirrel/bird house Maria! What kind of birds moved in? Maybe they'll share next year! Ha Ha!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could think as kindly of the squirrels but alas...I've had too many of them make holes in my roof and build nests in my attic...talk about hard to get rid of!! :(
